Restoration

voluntarily triggered process which consists of routing data from a secondary storage media to a primary storage. If the destination of the data to be restored is different from the original server, the restoration is said to be cross-restoration.

Library

(aka. Physical Library) backup device comprising an arm, a set of locations and having at least one physical drive for data storage. Modern libraries include locations called "mailboxes" to facilitate tape vaulting. The arm of the library is controlled by the backup server which controls the movement of tapes during the backup, archiving, duplication or restoration processes.

Retention

minimum time period ensuring that backed-up, archived or duplicated data are kept.

Virtual library

backup device based on a disk array dedicated for storing backed-up data. The libraries can be VLS (Virtual Library System) type or VTL (Virtual Tape Library).
